Cognitive Assessments

Commonly referred to as an IQ test, a cognitive assessment helps to understand a child’s cognitive strengths and difficulties. It assesses cognitive abilities such as the capacity to understand verbally presented information, visual-spatial skills, the capacity to hold information in mind for a short period of time, and the ability to process information quickly. This assessment can be used to determine whether a child meets the diagnostic criteria for Intellectual Disability (ID).

This assessment includes:

• A parent interview.
• Provision of a cognitive assessment such as the WISC-V or WAIS-IV depending on the child’s age.
• Provision of standardised behaviour screening questionnaires.
• Liaison with the child’s teacher.
• A parent feedback session.
• A comprehensive report detailing: results of the assessment, recommendations for appropriate classroom strategies, any diagnoses, and recommendations for any further intervention or assessment.
